What is tobacco?

Tobacco is the common name given to a wide range of plant species that are used in the process of making tobacco for smoking or chewing.  The leaves of these plants are harvested and put through a process of curing and drying. There are over 70 species of tobacco plants, the most common two being the Nicotiana tabacum and the stronger, more potent variant Nicotiana rustica.

What chemicals are in tobacco?

Tobacco contains hundreds of chemicals in varying amounts. A few of the chemicals in tobacco that may sound familiar are hydrogen cyanide, formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, ammonia, radioactive elements such as uranium and carbon monoxide. When tobacco cigarettes are lit up and burned, additional chemicals are produced making a total of thousands of chemicals that are inhaled. Many of these chemicals are found in household products like paint, household cleaners, insecticides, hair dyes and nail polish removers.

The most well known and the most famous chemical found naturally in tobacco is nicotine.

What is nicotine?

Nicotine is a natural element that is found in Tobacco. A major downside about nicotine is that it is extremely addictive. It is found in all tobacco products. Low doses of nicotine can act as a central nervous system stimulant. However, it soon becomes an addiction that can result in severe withdrawal symptoms when removed from the body. Nicotine is absorbed into the blood and excreted from the kidney. It will remain in the body for up to 8 hours after smoking.

Products such as traditional cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, chewing tobacco and snuff from the tobacco plant all contain nicotine. Nicotine acts by increasing the speed of the messages being relayed between the body and the brain. Nicotine receptors in the brain activate part of the brain’s 'pleasure center', releasing Serotonin, a natural chemical which is known for its feel-good effects.

After caffeine, Nicotine is the next most popular drug on the planet. In a similar way to sipping a strong coffee, nicotine is a stimulant that alters your mental state. For some, it may calm them down, helping to focus and concentrate. For others it may make them more alert, helping them to function better. This confusion is real - small quantities acts as a stimulant and larger doses can have a sedative effect.

What is the difference between vape and cigarette smoke?

Vaping involves the inhaling of aerosol created by the vape juice that is dispensed via the vaping device (or mod/atomizer). Vape juices are man-made and are formulated by ejuice manufacturers. They contain a wide range of flavors and sweeteners, as well as Vegetable Glycerin (VG) and Propylene Glycol (PG).

Cigarette smoke is created by combustion, or in simpler terms, the act of burning tobacco leaves. There are some research, but has not yet been approved by major health administrations, that vaping is safer due to the lack of combustion. As we have stated before, vaping contains four main ingredients:

  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Flavoring
  • Nicotine

The vapor is created by heating vape juice to a certain temperature to deliver the flavor and nicotine to the body.

So, does Vape Juice contain tobacco / nicotine?

In simple terms, no Vape juice does not contain Tobacco, but contains nicotine in varying amounts. But, because the amount of nicotine in the vape juice is physically stated on the labels, as a user you are fully aware of the quantities. Some eJuices are totally nic-free, also known as 0 nic vape juice, and others have larger quantities. Vaping is a fairly new trend and long term studies still have to be carried out to establish how harmful the nicotine additive in vape juice actually is.

Are there any meaningful studies?

As a relatively new trend, vaping and studies on vaping are becoming more and more readily available. Some are designed to prove that vaping is as dangerous as smoking, others to show that it is not. There are also studies that show vaping is a viable solution as a quit smoking aid.

One study that offers some meaningful insight is found here It is fairly detailed but will certainly answer many of your questions.

A study by Public Health England stating vaping is 95% safer than cigarettes:

Can I vape and avoid nicotine completely?

You certainly can if you want to! Many e-Juice varieties are sold as 0 nicotine.

Here are a few 0 nicotine  positives to consider

  •       These vape juices do not contain tobacco and therefore do not contain nicotine
  •       They are made almost totally of food-grade ingredients that are non-toxic
  •       There is no chance of becoming addicted
  •       You can take a break from nicotine but still continue to smoke. You may not get that expected high buzz, but you are still inhaling! It is a bit like drinking caffeine-free coffee.
  •       No throat burning sensation. One of the best known experiences of inhaling nicotine through vape, is the throat-hit. Also a sensation previous or current smokers are looking for in vape. Zero-nic vape juices are far smoother and less harsh on the throat.
  •       Smoking is often related to an oral fixation (hand to mouth) habit. Vaping can alleviate the anxiety or stress that this produces without the nicotine addiction.

What if I do want nicotine in my vape juice?

Again, no problem – other than what you already know about the addictive properties. Many vape juices contain nicotine but DOES NOT contain tobacco.

Nic-salt ejuices have been shown to allow nicotine to enter the bloodstream as fast as, or even faster than actual cigarettes. In these eliquid, nicotine is added together with ‘carriers’ which are a mixture of vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG). A distinct difference from Nic-salt and Freebase Nicotine is the acid used. Nic-salt is produced using Benzoic Acid and/or Lactic Acid. Freebase Nicotine is produced using Ammonia. We will have a dedicated article covering this topic in the near future.

It is a similar process to getting your nicotine fix from nicotine replacement treatments like gum, patches, sprays and lozenges. For those wanting to Vape as a way to eventually get the health benefits of smoking nicotine-free, this could be a good starting point.

Nicotine type is a good way to assess how much nicotine you will be consuming over time. Popular options in Freebase nicotine is 0mg, 3mg, and 6mg. Some brands do go as high as 12mg and 18mg but as the industry grows and more people switch over to vaping, lower Nicotine options are readily available and preferred. As for people who are struggling to quit with low nicotine options, Nic-salt was made popular in the vaping industry by Pax Labs (Juul), with 50mg (5%) and 30mg (3%) options, Nic-salt made quitting cigarettes a lot easier for many smokers.

In summary ....

Smoking traditional cigarettes is dangerous and harmful to your health. Vape Juice does not contain any trace of Tobacco. Vaping offers smokers a choice ranging from robust nic-filled ejuice to total 0 nic ejuice. As a smoker, you now have the choice to decide.
